These Shining Lives chronicles the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day, exploring their true story and its continued resonance. The fates of Catherine, Frances, Charlotte and Pearl, women who painted the faces of watches with radium in the early twentieth century, are tragic. However, theirs is a story of survival in its most transcendent sense, as they refuse to allow the company that stole their health to kill their spirits – or endanger the lives of those who come after them.
The play centers around four young women who work for the Radium Dial Company outside Chicago during the 1920s and 30s. It calls for four actresses in the 25-to-30 range, 3 of whom will also double as reporters, officials, judges, etc. It also requires two male actors – one in the 25-to-30 range, to play Catherine’s husband and several other characters; and one who can be older, to portray the women’s boss, radio announcer, doctors, judges, etc.
Feel free to email the director at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions regarding the roles, rehearsal schedule, etc.
